“This egregious violation and disrespect for our legal system must end,” Mr. Marcos said when announcing the ban in his state of the nation address to the Philippine Congress on July 22.

Decision to ban Chinese-run online gambling operations
He made the decision to ban Chinese-run online gambling operations after a Beijing-backed crackdown on sites targeting customers in China, where gambling is illegal. There are an estimated 400 Chinese-run online gambling operations across the Philippines, employing tens of thousands of foreign workers from China and Southeast Asia.
“Disguised as legitimate organizations, their operations have ventured into illegal areas far beyond gambling. Such as financial fraud, money laundering, prostitution, human trafficking, kidnapping, brutal torture, and even murder,” Mr. Marcos said.
These Chinese-run gambling companies, also known as Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). Located in the Philippines but cater to foreign customers.
Ban Enforced to Solve Many Problems in the Philippines
Mr. Marcos said that a complete ban on these gambling sites would solve many of the problems facing the Philippines.
He instructed the country’s gaming regulator to shut down and cease operations of POGOs by the end of the year. His decision was met with loud applause and a standing ovation in the Philippine Congress.
Government Supports People After Ban Is Enforced

The president also ordered labor and economic officials to find alternative jobs for Filipino workers who would be affected by the closure of these sites.
In 2022, the Philippines shut down at least 214 illegal Chinese offshore gambling sites in a government crackdown, deporting the first six of nearly 400 detained Chinese workers.
